New Year, New You – Healthy Antioxidant Breakfast Bowl

It’s okay. You can be honest. It’s just us here. You may have overindulged a wee bit over the holidays? Don’t worry. You are not alone. After all, part of the joy of the holidays is to celebrate. And this includes enjoying foods we don’t normally eat.
Now that the holidays are over, do you find yourself with a few extra pounds?
With our natural inclination for a fresh new start at the beginning of the calendar year, this often translates into a new-found interest in getting back on track with healthy eating habits. But how do you do this? From my personal experience, the best way to reduce unwanted pounds (besides exercising more) is to cut back on starchy carbs, all the while increasing good fats, protein and vitamin content in your meals. While many know that this means veggies, salads and protein take center stage for lunch and dinner, many struggle with what to eat for breakfast.
Common breakfast foods – cereal, breads and muffins – are not your best friends when it comes to loosing winter fat.
Sorry. I know you did not want to hear that, but it’s true. And as your health coach, it’s my job to let you know…. And help you come up with better alternatives. So what foods does that leave you with, you ask? It is important to start your day with a good filling meal. This ensures you don’t grab unhealthy snacks later in the day to fill the hunger gap. So half a grapefruit for breakfast is not going to cut it. Furthermore, unsatisfying meals are also not sustainable over time. In other words, meals which leave you deprived won’t help you reach your weight goals in the long run.
Want a healthier breakfast you can feel good about and enjoy?
To solve the low carb but high taste problem, I recommend breakfast shakes and smoothie bowls. Please check out my blog on how to make your own signature smoothie by clicking HERE. A breakfast bowl is similar to a smoothie, but it is much thicker and you serve it with a variety of toppings in a bowl. Presto. It’s easy, quick and delicious.
One of my favorite breakfast bowls is this antioxidant power explosion recipe I’d like to share with you today.
New Years, New You healthy breakfast bowl
1 cup almond milk (or other nut milk)
1 cup frozen mixed berries
1 large carrot
1 tbsp fresh ginger
1 serving of your favorite berry or vanilla protein powder (I use Vega brand)
1 lemon
1 tbsp Omega 3 oil
2-3 ice cubes
½ tsp cinnamon
A choice from any or all of these toppings:
Seeds like hemp, chia, flax or sunflower. Granola. Shaved coconut. Dollops of coconut yoghurt. Sliced berries, apples, bananas, pears or plums. Chopped nuts such as almonds, hazelnuts, pecans or walnuts.
Instructions:
- Pop all ingredients (except for the toppings) in a high-speed blender (like a Vitamix) until everything is blended to perfection!
- Pour it in the most beautiful bowl you have and add your toppings of choice. Feel free to use your creativity and decorate. Psst, kids love it.
- That’s it!
